This video walks through how to use the Pin Weight feature on the CURT BetterWeigh™ mobile towing scale. With this feature, you can get a live readout of the pin weight of your 5th wheel or gooseneck trailer right on your smartphone.

The CURT BetterWeigh™ #51701 is a Bluetooth-enabled OBD2 device that wirelessly syncs with your smartphone to provide a variety of vehicle and trailer weights. This includes truck weight, trailer weight, payload, tongue weight and pin weight, as well as weight distribution setup and trailer brake gain.

To measure kingpin weight or gooseneck pin weight with BetterWeigh™, start by choosing the weight range that best suits your truck-trailer setup. To set the range, tap the gear icon and select Pin Weight. Then, select a weight range.

Next, tap the Pin Weight feature on the BetterWeigh™ app homescreen. Make sure your truck and trailer couplers are aligned and ready to be connected. Then, step away from the truck and select Ready. BetterWeigh™ will take an initial analysis of your truck’s pitch.

After reading the truck pitch, couple the 5th wheel king pin or gooseneck trailer to your truck hitch. Then, load your trailer, and start getting real-time readouts of how your pin weight changes as the trailer is loaded.

What is my payload weight? This video provides simple instructions for how to use the Payload function on the CURT BetterWeigh™ mobile towing scale. With this feature, you can get an active readout on your smartphone of the weight of your truck’s payload as you are loading cargo and materials.

To measure the weight of your payload with BetterWeigh™, begin by selecting the weight readout range that best suits your vehicle. To change the readout, tap the gear icon and select Payload. Then, choose a weight range.

Next, select the Payload feature from the BetterWeigh™ app homescreen. Make sure your vehicle is parked in the spot where you intend to load it. Get out of the vehicle and tap Ready. Don’t touch the vehicle while it is taking its initial reading.

Once the pitch of the vehicle is measured, you can begin loading your truck bed and get your payload weight in real time.

How to Measure Truck Bed for 5th Wheel & Gooseneck Clearance

This video is a step-by-step guide to help you decide if you need a 5th wheel roller / sliding 5th wheel hitch or an offset gooseneck ball. We’ll use a simple equation and a couple measurements from your truck and trailer.

There are many questions associated with 5th wheel towing, particularly in relation to truck bed size and short bed trucks: What kind of hitch do I need for a 5th wheel? Do I need a long bed to tow a 5th wheel? Do I have to have a sliding 5th wheel hitch in a short bed truck? What size truck do I need to pull a 5th wheel?

A 5th wheel roller or short bed 5th wheel hitch provides extra clearance when towing a 5th wheel trailer, particularly when making turns. If your truck bed does not provide enough room for the trailer overhang, a roller may provide the extra clearance needed.

In this video, we will walk through the steps needed to answer the question: how to determine if a roller or sliding 5th wheel hitch is needed, whether you have a long bed or short bed truck.

First, measure the width of the 5th wheel trailer and divide by two (X). Common trailer widths include 84”, 96” and 102”.

Next, measure from the center of the 5th wheel hitch / coupling point to the cab of the truck (Y).

Then, apply the equation: Y - X = Z.

If Z is positive, you have enough clearance in the truck bed without a roller. If Z is 0 or negative, a roller will be needed for extra clearance.
